In an op-ed for the Dallas Morning News, nationally recognized regulatory scholar Dr. Patrick McLaughlin called for bold legislative action to fix Texas’ outdated regulatory system.

The piece, which ran in print on Sunday, January 26, explains how Texas' unnecessarily complex regulatory environment disproportionately impacts lower-income households and small businesses, stifles innovation, and hinders our state economy.

Dr. McLaughlin writes: "If left unchecked, Texas' regulatory thicket risks undermining the competitive edge that has drawn companies such as Tesla, Caterpillar, Southwest Airlines, Chevron, Hewlett Packard, and SpaceX to the state." He points to his recent policy brief for the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, in which he outlined how cutting regulatory red tape and improving our system could unlock many billions of dollars in economic growth.

The op-ed notes that for Texas companies that rely on dynamic ecosystems, reform is not just a policy issue, it's a business imperative. "If Texas wants to keep attracting people and businesses fleeing other states' onerous regulationsand create thousands of new jobspolicy makers should improve its regulatory system," Dr. McLaughlin writes. "And they should do it while the state's business-friendly reputation is still intact."

The Coalition is working to create a best-in-the-nation regulatory model for Texas. See our agenda for the 2025 legislative session here.
