Texas is one of the most regulated states in the country. And these regulations affect millions of Texans every day: from workers seeking professional licenses; to business owners who need to meet compliance requirements and pay their employees; to consumers who want safe, effective, and fairly priced goods and services. Given the widespread impact of state rules and regulations, it's no surprise Texas voters strongly support reforms to improve our regulatory system.
A recent survey by the Texas polling firm Baselice and Associates found a large majority of Texas voters favor legislation to establish clear and easily accessible rules, objective and transparent reviews, and a more modern and efficient regulatory process. Highlights from the data include:
94% of voters support requiring that all regulations be written in plain language.
89% of voters say all regulations should be reviewed on a regular basis.
76% of voters favor allowing a regulation to be repealed if an agency fails to properly perform required cost-benefit and impact analyses.
74% of voters say that to maintain a strong economy, Texas needs a better way to review, update, re-adopt, and repeal state regulations.
69% of voters favor adding third-party efficiency audits and performance measures for all state regulatory agencies.
